Workshop Meeting Places, Agena & Times

The workshop will be an intensive 3 Days. Day 1 and 2 we meet in the USU Merril-Cazier Library. Our class will be in LIB 101, which is immediately to your left in the breezeway of the Library Entrance.

  • Tuesday, July 14th, 2020 @ 9:00 to 18:00. Meet in Library 101
  • Wednesday, July 15th, 2020 @ 8:00 to 17:00. Meet in Library 101
  • Thursday, July 16th, 2020 @ 7:30 to 17:00. Meet in field in Brich Creek Idaho.

Logan Utah State University Campus

Day 1 and 2 are based on USU Campus.

Parking

The closest parking at Utah State University for visitors is in the Big Blue Parking Terrace for $10/day (Note this is waived for guests at the University Inn).

Airport Shuttles

For those flying into SLC Airport, the Salt Lake Express offers a shuttle service that drops off directly at the University Inn as well as other hotels.

Evening

On the first evening, we will have an optional, informal social gathering at Bull’s Head Grille. We will meet up around 6:30 or 7:00 and folks can enjoy a beverage and/or appetizers, or stay for a meal if they feel like it. Bull’s Head is an easy, 20 minute walk down the hill from the USU Campus to the North on 800 East:

On the second evening, we will hear local rancher Jay Wilde share his story about his experience with beaver and low-tech restoration up in Birch Creek, Idaho. This will take place over dinner (provided) at Herm’s Inn starting at 19:00. Herm’s Inn is about a 30 minute walk or 5 minute drive down to the Island:

Field Sites

Field Trip - Day 2 - Spawn Creek

Thanks to the Logan Ranger District of the USFS, for allowing us to use Spawn Creek for our Day 2 Field Trip. We will car pool up to the field site and back to campus. It is about a 35 minute drive from campus. Directions below (just head up Logan Canyon on Highway 89 and turn right at Temple Fork FR 007 15 miles up Canyon, take next left and you’ll see everyone):

NOTE: For emergencies, Logan Regional Hospital Emergency Room is the closest hospital to this field site @ 35 minutes away.

Spawn Creek Hike:

Here’s a map of our hike route. We will be crossing streams so have closed-toe footwear that can get wet. Depending on temperatures, waders might be nice or wading boots and wading socks.

Construction - Day 3 - Brich Creek, ID

IMPORTANT: Transportation will not be provided on Day 3 to Birch Creek. To save time (and hopefully wrap up earlier, we will meet on site. You are strongly encouraged to carpool with other workshop participants up to Station Creek. It is about an hour drive from Logan to the Field Site. There is ample parking on site, but we should try and limit the number of vehicles. There is some cell reception.

NOTE: For emergencies, Franklin County Medical Center in Preston is the closest hospital to this field site @ 20 minutes away.

Exploring Upper Birch Creek - Day 3

By 14:00ish we will make our way over to the Birch Creek Trailhead (about 15 minutes away @ 7767 East Birch Creek Road, Preston, ID 83263) to meet Jay Wilde and the Capstone Restoration Class.

We will then combine into a smaller number of four-wheel drive vehicles to make our way up through Jay’s Ranch and on to the US Forest Service land up FS Road 1054 to the Mill Hollow, Birch Creek Confluence. If conditions are wet, it will require four wheel drive and clearance. It is about 10-15 minute drive.

We will then wander around Birch Creek and up into Mill Hollow for a wrap up discussion to the workshop.


What do I need to bring?

Field Gear

This is a hands-on workshop. For the field portions, we will be hiking and working on real construction projects. Your safety is our top priority, but you are the most important person in ensuring your safety and comfort. So bring common sense. Our workshop is in the Fall in the mountains. You should be prepared for anything from sunny skies and sunburn, to snow and hypothermia (yes we’ve already had our first snow-storms, and yes we will work in the snow). We will be hiking through and doing work in small, wadeable streams. We strongly recommend a pair of chest waders and wading boots, to keep you warm and dry. You also should bring whatever outdoor clothing and gear to keep yourself comfortable. Layers, coats, gloves, hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a dry change of clothes for afterwards are all a must. For Day 3, no open-toed shoes will be allowed. Where work clothing suitable for a construction site.

We will provide you with basic personal protective equipment (PPEs like work gloves, eye protection, hard hats, ear protection). However, if you have any other

Meals, Snacks

Meals are provided with your registration to help us run the workshop more efficiently, as follows:

  • Day 1
    • Lunch provided
    • Snacks & Coffee provided at Quadside Cafe only in afternoon.
    • No dinner provided during evening @ Bull’s Head - Open Bar & Full Restaurant
  • Day 2 (Full Day):
    • No breakfast provided
    • Morning coffee provided and snacks or made to order coffees provided at Quadside Cafe all day.
    • Bag Lunches, snacks and beverages provided in field. Please bring your own water bottle.
    • Catered dinner provided during evening @ Herm’s Inn - and beverages donated by Anabranch Solutions
  • Day 3 (Full Day):
    • No breakfast or coffee provided (come fueled up and caffeinated)
    • Bag Lunches, snacks and beverages provided in field. Please bring your own water bottle.
    • On your own for dinner.

We will make sure that for snacks and meals there are some vegetarian/vegan options, but those with other dietary restrictions should make other arrangements.
